September heralds Heritage Month

At Artscape we celebrate our diverse cultures and identities through indigenous, contemporary and international artistic works. The flagship event this year is the Ingoduko the music concert in celebration IsiXhosa indigenous instruments the uhadi and umrhubhe. Equally it will pay tribute to the internationally renowned legend of indigenous music, the Honorary Dr Madosini Latozi Mpahleni the carrier of our culture and the source of indigenous music knowledge. Her contribution to the preservation of IsiXhosa indigenous instruments has been significant. The overall intention of the production is to encourage people to return to their roots and embracing “Africanism”.

African heritage in its diverse forms is playing an important role in fostering resilience as it constitutes a source of identity and cohesion for communities disrupted by bewildering change and economic instability

The overall focus on our artistic and cultural heritage seeks to promote social cohesion in particular residents of Cape Town and the Western Cape at large, itself a melting pot of divergent cultures. The ethos remains focused on the compromised reached in the foundation of the l day when it was decided that a national holiday would be created where South Africans and those who reside in it,of all cultures and creeds could come together and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage.

Meanwhile other exciting productions this Heritage Month include Listen to my Hands inspired by sign language and equally a challenge to hearing people to learn sign language and Jazzart Dance Theatre’s SURVIVE showcase.
