Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, brings to Artscape Theatre Centre, an exhibition of costumes and sketches celebrating the mastery of Opera. From 10 May to 10 June 2019, the exhibition will showcase a journey through the masterpieces and the most famous characters of the lyrical repertoire performed at the Teatro dell’Opera in the last century, from Barbiere di Siviglia to Aida, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Traviata, Andrea Chénier, Don Pasquale, Cavalleria Rusticana and many others.
The display is a selection of 49 sketches and 14 costumes. Each piece is related to a famous opera title while selected essays designed by theatrical artists ranges from 1912 to the present day considered as the golden age of opera. Many pieces of the display are of cultural and artistic importance. It covers a diverse history of the historical contexts, places, and characters that had been so wonderfully brought to life with their sublime and immortal music in the previous century. The exhibition is a way to discover how Italian opera was produced since its inception. It depicts the methods of antiquity, when the theatrical painted scene, that utilised perspective and lights only, could recreate incredible scenarios. Entry is free.
