Summer Season Shows

Artscape Theatre Centre’s Summer Season Launch kicked off in grand style, on Tuesday, 22 November.

Held in Artscape’s multi-functional Opera Bar, the event reflected 60s, 70s and 80s retro styled to reflect the Boogie-Licious production celebrating international pop, R&B and Motown songs and melodies of those eras.

Delivering the key note address CEO, Marlene le Roux emphasised the importance of this Artscape Brand marketing initiative not only to publicise the wonderful array of productions on offer over the Festive and New Year season but also the importance of showcasing Artscape key objective of transformation reflected in the inclusivity of formerly marginalised art forms such as the very successful Nama Jazz Series 2 and the Unmute ArtsAbility Festival, which forms part of the Summer Season productions.

“The city’s premier cultural hub will truly come alive for locals and tourists, both national and international, alike who are seeking an amazing arts experience,” she added.

The Artscape Summer Season will see culture vultures spoilt for choice. The packed, mixed-bag, include the original West End and Broadway production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic award-winning musical, Evita, presented by Pieter Toerien and David Ian in December while Cape Town City Ballet’s ever popular The Nutcracker, a perennial favourite of the festive season for young and old, showcases from mid-December.

Celebrating Cape Town culture, Soli Philander’s Nice Coat is, as he puts it – his Cape Town born out of a desire for a narrative about the place of his birth, his youth and his heart.

Adding to the celebratory mood this year sees the world celebrating 50 years of heart transplants. Hartklop, an Afrikaans production, explores the workings of the heart when in- love.

For those seeking a roaring New Year’s Eve party, they need look no further than Artscape come the night of 31 December. Cape Town City Ballet’s Cabaret Club opens on New Year’s Eve followed by a rip-roaring dance party on the Piazza.

Adding to the holiday spirit associated with January, The Imperial Ice Stars will enthral with Cinderella on Ice with its adrenaline-infused performances.

Those who love musicals will be spoilt for choice in the month of February. Cape Town Opera’s Tsotsi The Musical relates the gripping introspection of a hardened South African gang leader based on the novel by Athol Fugard, and known worldwide from the 2005 Academy Award-winning film, while Snoopy The Musical – The London Version based on the beloved Peanuts comic by Charles Schultz will sparkle with wit and warmth.
