It’s legends everywhere at Artscape this Heritage Month!

There is an adage that says: “If you can make it conscious, you can make the necessary changes…”

Heritage to me is a celebration, a commemoration and a reflection. It is supposed to open our hearts even further to understanding where we came from, where we are at, and how to make our futures better. How are we to progress, if we do not understand one another and more specifically one another’s cultures? I believe this requires conscious effort from all of us.

As we embrace Heritage Month, Artscape proudly presents a spectacular line-up celebrating the vibrant tapestry of South African culture. At the heart of this celebration is the tribute to a living legend, Pieter-Dirk Uys, who turns 80 this September. A cornerstone of South African theatre and a fearless satirist, Uys has challenged audiences for decades to confront uncomfortable truths with humour and wit. In partnership with the Suidoosterfees, we honour him with a double bill of his work from 10 to 20 September.

First up (from 10 September) is No Space on Long Street directed by Basil Appollis, starring the inimitable Terence Bridgett as he revives the spirit of Cape Town’s legendary Space Theatre. This one-man show is a nostalgic salute to the vibrant and chaotic era of the 70’s and 80’s. Following this (from 17 September) is African Times, directed by another legend, Thoko Ntshinga, exploring the complexities of the modern South African democracy through the lens of the Nkosi family’s journey. These performances, supported by the Consulate General of Germany, promise to be a thought-provoking homage to Uys’s influential career. This showcase is definitely one-of-a-kind and not to be missed!

But that’s not all! The month of September at Artscape is bursting with cultural events that celebrate our rich cultural heritage and diversity. Dive into the soul-stirring sounds of jazz with yet another legend: the Hilton Schilder 46th Album Launch, Crooks & Straights. This concert celebrates the legacy of South African jazz icons, blending Schilder’s iconic sounds with fresh new talent. Also a one-of-a-kind experience that is not to be missed!

For those interested in exploring our roots, the Camissa Heritage Tour offers a journey through South Africa’s colonial past, highlighting the resilience of the Indigenous San and Khoi communities. This theatrical experience, set against historic backdrops like the Castle of Good Hope, illuminates the often-overlooked histories of Indigenous people and slavery.

Our annual Youth Classical Concert, celebrating its 54th year, showcases young talents performing with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. This platform has been a stepping stone for many who now shine internationally, demonstrating the enduring power and provenance of youth classical performing arts and moreover, the power and importance of developing young talent.

And of course, in the Opera House, the welcome return of Chicago – The Musical is back to razzle dazzle us all. Running until 28 September, with its dazzling choreography and captivating story, with a brand new South African cast.

Join us in this celebration of heritage and creativity. Each event is an opportunity to reflect on our past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future.
