A Springtime Serenade of Stage, Song and Story

We are thrilled to share that Artscape has once again been voted the theatre of choice by Die Burger readers—earning the coveted gold award! This recognition belongs not only to our dedicated team and artists but, most importantly, to you—our loyal patrons. Your continued support breathes life into our theatre; without your presence, this building would be but an empty shell, and our artists would have no stage on which to share their craft. We also extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended Chicago the Musical over the past four weeks. Your enthusiasm and the sold-out performances throughout the run have been a powerful reminder of the magic that happens when audience and artistry meet.

Ah, October! That gentle sigh of springtime when petals pirouette on the breeze and the world seems to hum in technicolour. The air is perfumed with jasmine and possibility, and here at Artscape, the stage is no exception—bursting into bloom with a kaleidoscope of creativity, rhythm, and theatrical wonder. It is as the Afrikaans poet C Louis Leipoldt reminded us: “Oktobermaand is die mooiste maand…”

As the earth stretches and yawns from its winter slumber, so too does our beloved theatre awaken—its curtains fluttering like petals, its spotlight a golden sunbeam. This month, we invite you to wander through our garden of performances, each one a blossom in full, fragrant flourish.

Step first into the whimsical world of The Tramp, a pocket musical of laughter and longing. Then, let your senses swirl in Dance Intersect 2025, a dazzling celebration of global movement. The Duet Endowment Trust Gala follows, offering an operatic bouquet led by Golda Schultz and Jacques Imbrailo.

Coppélia twirls in with charm and mischief, while Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Orpheus McAdoo bring harmony and history to the stage. Young dancers shine in Centre Stage: Dancing Into Our Future 3, and Dancers Love Dogs reminds us that compassion, like art, is best when shared.

We are also delighted to announce that Artscape is taking the magic of theatre beyond the city once more. As part of our annual Rural Outreach project, we’ll be bringing a vibrant showcase to the charming town of Riversdal later this month. This special production features a rich tapestry of talent, including local artists from the Hessequa region such as rapper Jason “Hakkkiesdraad” Hartman, alongside celebrated performers from Dance For All, Cape Ballet Africa, Unmute Dance Company, and a stellar lineup of opera singers—among them the luminous Lynelle Kenned and Arline Japhta. It promises to be a heartfelt celebration of community, creativity, and connection.

So come, dear reader, and wander with us through this theatrical spring. The Artscape stages are in bloom. And you are most warmly invited.
