Artscape joins the global arts community in mourning the passing of Mr. Albert Mazibuko, a long-standing and deeply respected member of the world-renowned South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

For decades, Mr. Mazibuko was an integral part of the ensemble’s unmistakable sound and spirit, helping to preserve and elevate the tradition of isicathamiya music. Through countless international tours and collaborations, he played a vital role in showcasing South Africa’s rich cultural heritage to the world, carrying the nation’s flag high with every performance.

Artscape had the distinct privilege of hosting Ladysmith Black Mambazo for sold-out performances in Cape Town in both 2023 and 2025. Albert was a visible and generous presence during those Cape Town engagements – speaking with characteristic passion about the group’s purpose and its roots in the social fabric of South Africa. “Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a mirror of South African Society,” he said ahead of their 2023 Artscape performances. For him, singing for South African audiences was not merely a homecoming — it was, in his own words, “the completion of the lifecycle of the musical journey.” During their time at Artscape, Mr. Albert Mazibuko generously engaged with local artists, offering insight, mentorship, and inspiration that will continue to resonate within the creative community.

His contributions extended beyond performance, as he remained committed to nurturing young talent and sharing the values embedded in South Africa’s musical traditions.
