SUMMARY:The Yeomen of the Guard
DESCRIPTION:“Yeomen” is set in the Tower of London in the 16th Century. It is G & S’s most dramatic opera which has a believable story line with well-drawn characters. Intrigue\, comedy and a “tragic” ending make up the dramatic plot. This opera contains Sullivan’s most profound and beautiful music. Being in English\, it is easy to understand and to follow the story-line. All in all\, it is a very fine example of English Romantic Opera.

SUMMARY:Dance of the La Gumas
DESCRIPTION:This year we celebrate the centenary of Alex La Guma’s birthday. But who was this literary genius who was hounded\, tortured and driven from his home country? Who won countless awards all over the world? Who lies buried in the Heroes Acre of a Cuban cemetery? \nStarring Elton Landrew and Rehane Abrahams\, Dance of The La Gumas\, tells the remarkable story of a heritage that was almost buried by the bannings and exile of the apartheid state.  La Guma’s writing is brought to life with elegance and style by playwrights Basil Appollis and Sylvia Vollenhoven. It’s a powerful love story that combines the gentility of dance or poetry\, brutal torture and exotic global adventures with equal ease.

SUMMARY:Orpheus McAdoo
DESCRIPTION:Cape Town Opera\, in collaboration with David Kramer\, presents Orpheus McAdoo\, a new musical that follows on from the success of Orpheus in Africa in 2015. \nThis production tells the little-known story of an African-American choir – The Virginia Jubilee Concert Company – led by Orpheus McAdoo (Conroy Scott)\, which visited South Africa in the 1890s. Invited by the Governor’s wife\, Lady Loch (Natalie Robbie)\, they introduced a unique style of singing that had never been heard in the Cape before. They were an overnight sensation and went on to tour the country for the next two years. \nOrpheus McAdoo the musical\, recreates how his choir sang the old spirituals more than 120 years ago. In addition to traditional songs\, Kramer has created new music inspired by early American folk music\, minstrel songs\, early ragtime and opera. \nFeaturing a star-studded cast including Brittany Smith\, Dean Balie\, Jody Abrahams\, Eldon van der Merwe\, Elton Landrew and Edith Plaatjies. \n \n

SUMMARY:Thandiswa - Sankofa in Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:Award winning musician Thandiswa returns to Artscape after her sold-out show in 2023 with music from her new album Sankofa (to be launched in May 2024 \nSankofa is a Twi word from the Akan people of Ghana. It means to “go back and fetch what has been left behind.” In our journeys we may lose our sense of self\, our history\, our will to fight. We may lose language or ways of being. Sankofa invites us to go back and fetch what has been lost so that we can return whole. Recorded in Johannesburg\, Dakar\, and New York\, Sankofa combines archival Xhosa music\, jazz and west African music. Largely developed with co-composer Tendai Shoko\, it includes tracks produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and Nduduzo Makhatini. \nThe Sankofa Live show will present this music alongside Thandiswa’s old classics. Her first solo album\, Zabalaza\, celebrates 20 years in 2024
