DESCRIPTION:  \nAnd Then…\, the latest iteration in an award-winning dance series\, opens at the Artscape Arena Theatre on 29 November 2023. \njackï job is an accomplished artist known for constantly raising the bar of contemporary dance performance. Her dance series And Then… began in 2018. It has taken on many forms – each one planting the seed for the next – including a film that aired during lockdown in 2020. And Then… was nominated for a Naledi Theatre Award and won the UCT Meritorious Award for Creative Works in 2022. \njackï job approaches her creations with a sense of magic\, constantly seeking to conjure new textures and vibrations on stage. A contemporary dancer\, first-generation Butoh performer and pioneer of Butoh on the African continent\, she has created a polished\, unique dance style that ignites the imagination. Using shaking\, unpredictable\, rhythmic movements\, her body extends and contracts in ways that reach into the heart. She creates true musical phrases in movement\, animated with the ebb and flow of tension and relaxation. Her dance is grounded on the human breath. \nIn concert with her longstanding collaborator José Dias\, she creates innovative\, organic performances that have riveted and moved people all over the world. The duo intricately weaves set movement and structured improvisation techniques\, creating unusual synergy and connection\, carrying all those who witness to a place of deep soul-listening. Dias brings the piano to life\, and it becomes the third performer. He manipulates the chords and strings\, acknowledging the piano’s ancestry as wood and tree\, as metal and rock\, as ivory and animal. \nAnd Then… is about the way we love and vibrate with sentient worlds. It reaches for the most basic and universal of human instincts. It is an organic journey of desire\, compassion\, acceptance and love. DESCRIPTION:Jazzart Dance Theatre in collaboration with Cape Town Opera\, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Phoenix Dance Theatre presents the new\, critically acclaimed 5-star production of ‘Requiem: Journeys of the Soul’ choreographed and directed by Dane Hurst with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Neo Muyanga.  \n  \nThe brand-new production premiered in the UK in collaboration with Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre and Cape Town Opera was hailed as a 5-star “knock-out double bill” and promises to be a thought-provoking and poignant expression of remembrance and rebirth in a post-pandemic society. Neo Muyanga’s new work entitled ‘After Tears’ was described as an “invocation of South African rituals of mourning and remembrance – ultimately celebrating the beauty of life – colourful\, joyous\, uplifting: food for the soul.” This new work was specially commissioned by Opera North to be performed along and as a companion piece to Mozart’s iconic masterpiece entitled\, ‘Requiem’. Muyanga writes – “My new work After Tears laments the palpable sense of loss after the dream of a utopia has been deferred. The piece is a rallying call for individual citizens to work collectively\, with empathy\, to rebuild after a period of distress and loss. It envisages this collective work as a vibrant ‘After Tears party’ where the blues of mourning are submerged and constrained by the reverie of a cleansing ceremony.”  \n  \nWith lighting design by Faheem Bardien\, the music to this production will be brought to life by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra\, Schola Cantorum -The Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir\, Cape Town Opera’s soloists and award-winning chorus under the musical direction of Adam Szmidt.  \n  \n \n  \n

Characters like Cinderella\, Jack and Jill\, Boy Blue\, Mother Hubbard and Humpty Dumpty will be displaying the social ills on the Cape Flats and raising awareness on GBV\, poverty\, orphan and vulnerable children.

DESCRIPTION:Camissa Heritage Tour retraces South Africa’s colonial past and it’s connection to the Netherlands. We tell the story of our Indigenous communities\, the ‘San’ and ‘Khoi’\, who inhabited South Africa’s landscape dating back thousands of years. These communities resisted the scourge of the settlers and refused to work for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). \nThis sight specific performance adapted for theatre takes the audience on a route within The Castle of Good Hope. Through this artistic and educative project we bring an awareness to the narratives of the Indigenous People of South Africa\, the history of slavery in the Cape and colonisation by The Netherlands to attention. When we remember we reconnect with who we are. CAMISSA\, place of sweet waters\, its presence reminds us that water still serves as the source for cleansing and healing. \nThe Camissa Heritage Tour intends to impact and engage audiences by changing their perspective on experiencing history\, heritage and culture through performance.

SUMMARY:Manyano “The Spirit of Ubuntu”
DESCRIPTION:To kick-off the Artscape Heritage Festival\, Elvis Sibeko Studios in association with Artscape presents MANYANO “The Spirit of Ubuntu”. MANYANO “The Spirit of Ubuntu”\, premiered at the China Xinjiang International Dance Festival in July 2023\, is a South African Afro epic musical dance production that resuscitates the spirit and power of Ubuntu. \nThe production is directed and choreographed by the internationally award-winning producer\, choreographer\, theatre maker\, dance aficionado Elvis Sibeko with co-choreography by Nkosinathi Mngomezulu and the dancers. Musical direction is by the award-winning soundscape and original music designer Zimbini Makwetu. \nThe programme showcases dances from different cultures within South Africa namely: Zulu\, Xhosa\, Ndebele\, Tsonga\, Venda\, Swati\, Pedi\, Khoisan\, Tswana\, and Sotho\, which later culminates in the never-before-seen Manyano dance celebration\, where all the different cultural groups come together in unison to create one dance.  Also featured in this showcase are South African social dances such as pantsula\, gumboots\, Sophia Town\, street dance\, and amapiano. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
