SUMMARY:Dance of the La Gumas
DESCRIPTION:This year we celebrate the centenary of Alex La Guma’s birthday. But who was this literary genius who was hounded\, tortured and driven from his home country? Who won countless awards all over the world? Who lies buried in the Heroes Acre of a Cuban cemetery? \nStarring Elton Landrew and Rehane Abrahams\, Dance of The La Gumas\, tells the remarkable story of a heritage that was almost buried by the bannings and exile of the apartheid state.  La Guma’s writing is brought to life with elegance and style by playwrights Basil Appollis and Sylvia Vollenhoven. It’s a powerful love story that combines the gentility of dance or poetry\, brutal torture and exotic global adventures with equal ease.

SUMMARY:He Had It Coming
DESCRIPTION:Fresh from their extended Artscape run of My Fellow South Africans that continues its national tour\, MVG Productions will stage He Had It Coming with the same team from 14-19 August at Artscape as part of Artscape’s Woman Humanity Festival. \nTaking its name from the lyrics of Cell Block Tango in the hit musical Chicago\, He Had It Coming uses satire\, comedy\, poetry\, song and drama to explore and educate audiences about the scourge of gender-based violence and its related themes. \nFirst produced in October 2019 when Van Graan was an artist-in-residence at the University of Pretoria\, this version of the revue has evolved during a period of rehearsal at Artscape with the extremely talented and versatile Kim Blanche Adonis who was rehearsing and performing My Fellow South Africans at the same time. Van Graan is an artist-in-residence at the University of Johannesburg this year which has afforded him the time and space to grow\, produce and tour these two one-person revues. \nSince Adonis first performed the work under the direction of Daniel Mpilo Richards in August 2022\, the work has evolved with new sketches that take account of a younger audience at which a version of the revue is aimed. \nThere are two versions of the show\, with an ‘adult’ performance of 60 minutes that will be staged at Artscape from 14-19 August\, and a shorter 45-minute piece that targets high school learners\, NGOs and their constituencies to serve as a catalyst for discussion and education about the themes raised in the piece. \nWriting about the 2022 edition of He Had It Coming\, Robyn Cohen states \nKim Blanche Adonis is absolutely feisty as she segues between multiple characters in sketches underpinned by gender-based violence and the fear which women deal with daily… \n …Van Graan’s script is threaded with his unerring and unflinching gaze on the nation that we love but which is ruptured and fractured by so much grief and despair. It is the self-deprecating humour that gets us through. \n \nFor more information about the writer’s work\, see www.mikevangraan.co.za or to book a performance\, write to art27m@iafrica.com.

SUMMARY:ABFAB DRAG
DESCRIPTION:The annual hit\, ABFAB DRAG\, returns to Artscape with a bang on 11th and 12th August 2023. With fine feathers preened\, false eyelashes fluttering and sequins glittering\, the fiercely feminine/masculine are gathering to celebrate the world of “lip sync”\, with ambiguous seduction and gender identification. Cape Town has a scintillating DRAG tradition that dates back to the thirties\, especially in vibrant District Six. Today the pageants\, the parties\, the hair dressing salons\, and the fabulous drag queen “balls” still flourish across the City. However\, it`s often hosted in underground clubs\, catering to a select few who know where to find them. ABFAB DRAG endeavours to put the crème de la crème of DRAG centre stage. \nIt features top class\, DRAG divas Vida Fantabisher\, SA’s Got Talent 2016 runner-up Manila von Teez\, as well as Kat Gilardi\, Jayde Kay Johnson and Angel Lalamore of drag cabaret group 3D fame\, all choreographed and put together with the sublime dancers of the Jazzart Dance Theatre. MC Soli Philander is no stranger to the Artscape Stage and will narrate you through this magical show. Basil Appollis stiches it all together and cracks the designer whip as director. \nWe boast with “SOLD OUT” houses in previous years so book early. \n  \n \n
