LES SYLPHIDES / INGOMA
Start DateMay 19 2021
Cape Town City Ballet presents a double bill of works: LES SYLPHIDES, the quintessential “romantic reverie” as sylphs, imaginary spirits of the air dance in the moonlight with the “poet” to the exquisite composition of Frederic Chopin. This timeless work choreographed by Mikhail Fokine was staged for CTCB by British ballet luminary, Lynn Wallis.
In complete juxtaposition to the pastoral fantasy of Les Sylphides the company proudly presents the Olivier award-winning work, INGOMA, choreographed by South African, Mthuthuzeli November. This powerful and visceral work was commissioned by Ballet Black, London, having its premiere in March 2019 at the Barbican Theatre. It explores the artwork of Gerard Sekoto, most particularly the Song of the Pick, his Blue Head, and the Witwatersrand mine strike of 1946.
