On Tuesday 15 April, at 13h00, Cape Town Opera (CTO) in association with Artscape will present Opera On The Go, a free one-hour concert in the Chandelier Foyer at Artscape. Opera and music lovers can look forward to a captivating repertoire featuring, among others, highlights from upcoming productions at Artscape, Theatre on the Bay, and the Toringkerk in Paarl.
Audiences will be treated to excerpts from Verdi’s Aida, Fauré’s Requiem, and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. The concert will showcase outstanding sopranos, including Nobulumko Mngxekeza, who stars in Aida at Artscape in May 2025, and CTO House Soloist Brittany Smith who will appear in The Barber of Seville at Theatre on the Bay in August 2025.
The renowned Cape Town Opera Chorus will perform stirring choral selections from Aida and Requiem, the latter of which will be presented in full at the Paarl Toringkerk on 19 April 2025. Also taking the stage at Opera On The Go will be CTO Judith Neilson Young Artists, including the talented Sisikelelwe Mngenela and Mongezi Mosoaka. The singers will be accompanied by CTO vocal coach Jan Hugo on piano throughout.
This lunchtime concert is free and open to the general public.
The ethos of these concerts is to offer a different lunch-time experience to the immediate Foreshore city workers where Artscape is situated, as well as other city workers and city dwellers who could experience some captivating theatre in the form of dance, drama, music and song, but moreover to give access to those who are constrained financially due to the affordability of tickets as well as those evening transport constraint where a day-time performance would be more accessible including the elderly. Its primary aim, however, is to offer the Associated Companies, viz. Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town City Ballet, Jazzart Dance Theatre, Unmute Dance Company, Cape Town Opera, Zip Cap Circus, Woman Zone and Elvis Sibeko productions – our latest addition of Associated Companies also focused on dance – a promotional opportunity to showcase their respective upcoming productions of the year.
So come early as seats are limited and the Chandelier Foyer is often filled to capacity. Thus bring your lunch and munch away while you enthusiastically enjoy the respective performances on offer. A selection of teas and coffee will be on sale to complement your lunch, or in case you forget to pack your lunch box an array of sandwiches and wraps will be on sale too.
