Call for auditions: Artscape Theatre Centre New Voices 2017

Artscape Theatre Centre is calling for auditions for the 2017 New Voices Programme to be held from the 10th to 13th July at Artscape.

The New Voices Programme seeks to give voice to new theatre makers, directors, choreographers, scriptwriters and creative expression. It seeks to restore the dignity and confidence of artists of multiple creative expression. Moreover it seeks to excavate the buried stories in order to reclaim their identity in the mainstream.

This year’s programme consists of four productions, Imbewu: The Seed, Once Upon a Nation, Night & Day and So-Called.

Imbewu: The Seed – To be staged from 02 to 07 October 2017

In this family drama, a father is on a mission to get a second son and successor for the family business. The answers to his question lie deep within the family secrets, that will change his life for better or worse and challenge his beliefs. Four actors are required as follows:

·         Sizwe, a 45-year-old Taxi business owner

·         Nomzi, a 37-year-old Housewife, married to Sizwe

·         Mfuneko, their 21-year-old son

·         Duna, a 49-year-old mechanic, best friend of Sizwe’s

 

All actors auditioning must be available from 11 September to 07 October and are required to prepare the following:

A monologue in IsiXhosa for the role of Sizwe; a monologue in IsiXhosa and a song for the role of Duna; a monologue in IsiXhosa and a song for the role of Nomzi and a monologue in IsiXhosa and English for the role of Mfuneko

Audition Details

Date: 11 July 2017, 10:00 – 15:00

Once Upon a Nation: To be staged from 23 to 28 October 2017

The play uses skit-comedy, parody and story-telling devices to portray the various ways in which this nation, once destined for greatness, has lost the plot, and that many people’s lives have not REALLY changed more than 20 years into our Democracy. Three actors are required as follows:

ACTOR 1: A white female between 20 and 30

Must be able to sing, eloquently speak English and in colloquial Afrikaans. A physical theatre background, and the ability to play the piano are strong recommendations.

 

ACTOR 2: A coloured male between 20 and 30

Must be able to sing, eloquently speak English AND in colloquial Afrikaans. Must be able to do an Australian accent. A physical theatre background, and the ability to play the piano are strong recommendations.

 

ACTOR 3: A black male between 20 and 30

Must be able to sing and eloquently speak English. A physical theatre background, and the ability to play the piano are strong recommendations.

 

All actors auditioning must be available from 02 to 28 October and are required to prepare the following:

-          A Monologue of no more than 3 minutes, preferably showcasing different accents;

-          One a capella song that showcases your range.

 

Audition Details

Night & Day: To be staged from 09 to 14 October 2017

Artscape is seeking two male characters to play in a two-hander set in prison.

Character 1

Name: Vincent, Prisoner aged 25 - 40

Gender: Male

Physical Characteristics: medium build, African, isiXhosa-speaking

Vincent is a talkative, charming and intelligent man who does not look like a “typical” prisoner. Beneath the upbeat nature is a man uncomfortable with silence who hides his true feelings behind a smile.

Character 2

Name: Alfred, Prison Warder aged 30 - 45

Gender: Male

Physical Characteristics: large to very large build, African, isiXhosa-speaking

Alfred is a religious man who holds traditional values. He generally has a mild temperament and an air of wisdom; he is assertive when he needs to be.

All actors auditioning must be available from 11 September to 07 October and they will be paired up on the audition day.

Audition Details

So-Called: To be staged from 16 to 21 October 2017

"So-Called" follows the stories of three self-identifying coloured women as they attempt to unpack issues of coloured femaleness. Finding themselves in South Africa's great citadel of Whiteness, Cape Town, three "so-called coloured" women begin to unravel the doek that is Colouredness.

Artscape is seeking two coloured female actors, between ages of 20 and 30; preferably with theatre or performance training. Actors auditioning will be required to participate in a workshop which will comprise of a warm-up, ice breakers, facilitated sharing of personal stories (that pertain to coloured heritage/growing up coloured) and presentation of a prepared monologue (the text which will be provided to successful applicants). They also need to be available from 25 September to 21 October.

The New Voices Programme is an integral part of Artscape mission as an inclusive cultural centre for all, showcasing all arts genres and seeking to develop and give platforms to narratives, aesthetics and language that have been, and still are, marginalized in creative industries.

The Artscape Theatre Centre, which belongs to the provincial administration, was opened on 19 May 1971 as the Nico Malan Theatre Centre. In line with the new South African Political dispensation and the concurrent changes, the complex was renamed in March 2001.
