Capetonian walks away with coveted title
Excitement reigned supreme at the final gala concert of the Artscape Youth National Music Competition on 10 October at the Artscape Theatre.
After four gruelling rounds of the competition, Hamman Schoonwinkel from Bellville, Cape Town was declared the Overall Winner. Hamman is 16 and plays the saxophone. Amongst the prizes he received were Gold and Silver Medals and R10 000. The competition offered prizes totalling R65 000 and was for classical pianists and orchestral instrumentalists.
The Category Prize Winner for piano was Irene Kim (19) from Stellenbosch. She received a Silver Medal and R5 000. The runners-up in the piano category were Melissa Tu (16) from Bishops Court and Willem de Beer (17) from Pretoria.
Each received a Bronze Medal and R2 500.
In the wind section Hamman Schoonwinkel and Myles Roberts (flute) were the winners and runners-up were Meyer Scholtz (17) from Tyger Valley on clarinet and Levi Alexander (18) from Bellville on saxophone.
The best performance of a concerto in the final round receiving R2 000 was Willem de Beer, and the best performance of a South African work was Myles Roberts (17) from Kraaifontein on flute. He received R1 500. The most promising participant, who was not a finalist, was Caryn Reed (14) from Bethlehem on piano. She received R1 500.
All third round participants received R1 000 and all final round participants received R1 500.

Sentimientos
Sentimientos explores the broad spectrum of human emotions, with a fresh take on flamenco rhythms and sounds. Director Carolyn Holden and costumier Dicky Longhurst have drawn on contemporary influences to create a visually impacting feast of dance. This vibrant production includes a musical ensemble incorporating instruments not traditionally associated with flamenco.

In a small and conservative South African village, where everybody knows everybody but secrets are hidden, the local petrol station is the centre of village gossip. One morning a tent appears on the open land next to the garage. The tent and its occupants change the lives, alliances, relationships and futures of all in the village. The Tent is a humorous, provocative, and powerful play about how South Africans feel about themselves and others.

The story of CATS is based on a series of poems by T.S. Eliot.
At night in a rubbish dump, the Jellicle Cats come out to play. It's the night of the annual Jellicle Ball when their leader, Old Deuteronomy, will announce the name of the cat to be reborn to a new life in the Heavyside Layer. The announcement will be made just before dawn. While they wait, the cats amuse themselves (and the audience!) with stories of famous cats of the past and present. Dawn comes, and Old Deuteronomy gathers the cats together for his announcement.
