Start DateFeb 12 2021
A textile artwork connecting the women of Cape Town – one stitch at a time
Some time ago the team at Woman Zone started The Everywoman Project. This grew out of a donation by Da Gama Textiles of shweshwe fabric for decoration purposes on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March at Artscape. Coming up with an innovative project to use the remaining cloth was the mandate and, in collaboration with the Cape Design Institute, the ‘yoyo’ – and The Everywoman Project – was born. This small fabric rosette represented the Woman Zone tumbleweed logo, was simple to sew and fun to make.
Over a series of workshops held at the Woman Zone Library Hub at Artscape and a number of communities around Cape Town, sharing tea and stories, hundreds of women sewed these bright little motifs – and the number of yoyos grew.
Now, some 4000 ‘yoyos’ later, the time has come to turn them into one glorious rainbow textile artwork under the guiding eye of artist-designer Mara Fleischer. Construction will take place at the Zeitz MOCCA courtesy of the Education Department where it will be displayed for a short period before going to its final home at Artscape on the Foreshore as part of the buildings’ 5oth anniversary celebrations.
Workshops creating the ‘yoyos’ have taken place at Zeitz MOCCA between 12-20 Feb 2021. Keep an eye out on social media for the reveal of the textile artwork later this year.
